As part of our ‘The Method’ artist development program – Mali Nakalevu, recently had the opportunity to write the score for a visual art installation by Sydney-based Samoan artist Greg Semu.

The installation ‘Lifting the Tapu’ is part of MCA’s socially-engaged art program C3West, which focuses on Western Sydney communities and artists. Mali wrote an incredible soundtrack which was produced in the NKA Studio by Christ Hamer-Smith.

Opening celebrations kick-off on Saturday June 8th 2024 from 2pm at Dawson Mall, Mt Druitt. The artwork will be on display until the end of June.

In 2023 Nakama Arts funded the purchase and renovation of a shipping container, providing the necessary studio equipment and renovations to transform it into a self-contained music studio.

Complete with midi keyboards, an Allen & Heath mixer, QSC speakers, Audio-Technica headphones and microphones, computers, cabling and – don’t sweat it – an aircon!

The music studio serves as an extension of the cultural education and healing services of Winangali Infusion, spear-headed by Creative Director – Buddy Hippi.

Thanks to our connections at Arts and Cultural Exchange  and the good people at the Centre of Excellence & Wellbeing we have recently been presented with the opportunity to help set up a music production studio in Bourke.
The ‘Centre of Excellence and Wellbeing’ is a local community-based organisation with an aim to address the multi-complex social and emotional wellbeing issues and mental health issues in Bourke. The centre has a studio space ready to go but no proper gear to get it underway.
Together with the generous help of Store DJ we are shipping a load of equipment to fit-out the studio and then on June 20th & 21st we will be in Bourke setting up the space and facilitating our first music workshops with mentors Kobie Dee and P.Smurf.
We hope this is the beginning of an on-going project for the community in Bourke as we organise weekly online mentoring sessions and regular face to face visits to support the local talent in the area.

This week we commenced the recording of Nina Gotsis new album in collaboration with the great people of Club Weld.

Nina is an amazing song-writing talent and we are over the moon to be able to assist in the making of this record, working alongside Sam Worrad and Toby Martin.

RealArtWorks is a not for profit, post disability arts company based in Lismore.

They are dedicated to developing creative arts projects that encourage social awareness and are really doing some amazing work with local artists up that way.

Unfortunately during the recent floods on the north coast RealArtWorks performance and creative space ‘SeeSpace’ was decimated, leaving it unusable for their artists.

We have been fortunate enough to assist RealArtWorks with getting ’See Space’ up and running again. We’ve shipped up speakers, microphones, headphones and a mixer and Store DJ have generously donated all the bits to connect, mount and interface and together we’ve got them back recording, rehearsing and performing.

It’s been an absolute pleasure to be able to support the great people that run RAW and we hope to collaborate further with the team on future projects.
